On your free night off on Thursday one option would be the following:
Reclaiming Jesus Service & Candlelight Vigil to the White House
Thursday, May 24th, 7 p.m., National City Christian Church
5 Thomas Circle, Washington, DC 20005
We invite you to join us for a service of prayer and gospel proclamation, followed by a procession to the White House and a silent prayerful candlelight vigil as a witness that the church will not be complicit, but faithful.
In this moment of political, moral, and theological crisis in America we are deeply concerned about the resurgence of white nationalism, racism, and xenophobia; misogyny; attacks on immigrants, refugees, and the poor; the regular purveying of falsehoods and consistent lying by the nation’s highest leaders; and moves toward autocratic political leadership and authoritarian rule.
We believe two things are at stake: the soul of the nation, and the integrity of faith. We believe the issues are more deeply theological than merely political or partisan. We believe it is a time for prayer and response, for contemplation and action.
On Ash Wednesday a diverse group of church elders met to pray and discern how the church should respond. They drafted the Reclaiming Jesus Declaration, which focuses on six core beliefs that are grounded in scripture, including: all are created in God’s image and are part of the body of Christ; that we are called to love and protect the most vulnerable in our communities; and that speaking truth is central to living moral lives, among others. The declaration signals that the church will no longer stay silent as Jesus and the Gospel are corrupted and misappropriated by those looking to gain political power. However, this declaration isn’t just a document to be read and then placed on a shelf; it's meant to be a call to faithful action. Now is the time for Christians from across the country and the world to Reclaim Jesus and the good news he represents. Will you join us.
