Speaker Profile: Will Willimon
An elder in the United Methodist Church, Professor Willimon served as the dean of Duke Chapel and Professor of Christian Ministry at Duke University for 20 years. He returned to Duke after serving as the UMC Bishop of the North Alabama Conference from 2004 to 2012. Currently Will is professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry, Duke Divinity School and also pastor at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church. Will Willimon is a graduate of Wofford College. He holds a Masters of Divinity degree from Yale Divinity School, as well as earning a Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from Emory University. He has been awarded honorary degrees from a dozen colleges and universities including Wofford College, Lehigh University, Colgate University, Birmingham-Southern College and Moravian Theological Seminary.
In 1992, he was named as the first Distinguished Alumnus of Yale Divinity School. Will has also taught in Germany and Asia in various seminaries. He is the author of more than 60 books. His “Worship as Pastoral Care” was selected as one of the ten most useful books for pastors in 1979 by the Academy of Parish Clergy. More than a million copies of his books have been sold. Will’s articles have appeared in many publications including The Christian Ministry, Quarterly Review, Liturgy, Worship and Christianity Today. He is editor-at-large for The Christian Century. His book Pastor: the Theology and Practice of Ordained Leadership is used in dozens of seminaries in the United States and Asia. Will’s most recent book entitled Incorporation is a novel out of Cascade Press. He is editor-at-large for The Christian Century.
