Speaker Profile: Rabbi Ben Romer

Bio

Rabbi Ben Romer became the Spiritual Advisor for Bonay Kodesh, an Emerging Jewish Community in the Greater Richmond, VA area in June 2014. Previously Rabbi Romer was the Rabbi and Spiritual Leader at Congregations in Richmond, VA, Wilmington, NC, Spartanburg, SC, West Lafayette, IN and Hollywood, FL.  The only rabbi to deploy for Operation Just Cause in Panama and the first rabbi into Saudi Arabia and Iraq during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, During his 22 years as an Army Chaplain he also serving in Bosnia and Kosovo serving a total of 12 years on Active Duty, half of that time in Europe.

During his Chaplaincy Rabbi Romer developed a deep commitment to interfaith understanding. Throughout his military chaplaincy actively worked to integrate a stronger understanding and inclusion of the wide diversity of religious and spiritual communities represented. He has taken that commitment forward as he has helped develop the Faith Forum, an interfaith clergy group devoted to bringing better understanding to the greater Richmond community, was a co-founder of the Bon Air Trialogue, a Jewish- Christian- Muslim program entering its sixth year and Interfaith Outreach United (I.O.U.)- Richmond- a day of service in which over 900 members of churches, synagogues and mosques reach out to help others.

Rabbi Romer received his MAHL, ordination and Doctor of Divinity from Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion. Rabbi Romer is a member of the 2010-2011 Rabbi Balfour Brickner Class of Rabbinic Fellows for Social Justice. He was the first rabbi to co-lead the initial interfaith Israel mission by the Richmond Jewish Foundation. In 2014 he was named one of the top five “Sources of Inspiration” by Richmond Magazine. Rabbi Romer was born in Huntington, West (by God) Virginia but grew up on the west side of Michigan near Grand Rapids. He is married to Karen Levit Romer, a certified personal trainer. They have three children, Tamar, Micah and Elisheva.
